If you are like many people who have dogs, you probably hate the fact that when a guest comes into your home, your dog jumps all over them. The thing you have to do is to socialize them to humans as well as other dogs. As an owner of two very large breed dogs, I have used the following suggestions to help improve my puppy's behavior.
One thing I did was to take both my dogs to the mall when they were about 10 weeks old. Now I didn't take them into the mall, but right outside the main entrance. Everyone loves puppies and you would be surprised at how many people came up to us and asked if they could pet them. We would take them there for about an hour, 3 times a week. We did this for about a month. What it did was get my dogs used to seeing other people and it also got them accustomed to human contact. I thought that this worked great.
To get them familiar with other dogs we did a few things. One day a week, we would drop them off at puppy daycare for the day. They were around other dogs so they could play and just be dogs for the day. The good thing was, when they got home, they were completely exhausted. As the old saying goes, a tired puppy is a good puppy. We would also take them to the dog park on the weekends. This was great. There were always a lot of older dogs at the park to show my puppies the proper way to behave. We still bring them there to this day.
So start your puppy's socialization right away (around 10 weeks old). You will have a much more balanced dog later on in its life.
