Shipping containers, like many items, ultimately turn into a commodity as people often purchase them based on cost first and condition second. Here we'll discuss container price points and how they relate to the container condition and point out uses where a lower quality unit may work versus when you should be more particular about your purchase and spend more for a better unit.

If you intend to purchase a container to store roofing materials, landscape ornaments or something else that you need to secure but are not concerned about getting wet due to a roof leak in the upcoming months then by all means purchase the cheapest container meeting your needs. You should look for a container in "as is" condition, usually the lowest price point due to its rusty and semi trusty condition. If you plan to use your prefabricated house for habitation, like becoming part of a container house or modular building and you will do a lot of modifications then you may still be in luck. If much of the container skin will be cut away or the plans call for a site built roof where the containers roof will not be expected to function then you will be able to save some money if you can find a structurally sound shipping container in "as is" condition. Make sure you inspect the corner posts and rails, if they are straight, not rusted and the unit is priced right, then go ahead and make the purchase.
