Audio books are becoming increasingly popular as a way to read books on the go. They are particularly useful for people who struggle with reading due to physical limitations or mental illnesses.
Unlike paper books hörbücher, which can only be accessed in libraries or bookstores, audiobooks can be listened to anywhere and anytime. They are available through apps for desktops, iPads, and smartphones.
Some independent audiobook publishing houses and small press initiatives challenge the traditional publishing companies. For example, the Danish author Soren Jessen has established his own audiobook company, Mallebuh, narrating and producing his own books. He retains the copyrights to his audiobook version, making him able to sell them - especially through library streaming via eReolen.
