If you play in a game with a 5% rake taken from each pot, you not only must beat the other players, but you must beat them often enough to compensate for the somewhat smaller pots you’re winning. There’s a lot to becoming an expert poker player, but most experts agree that the starting point is becoming a tight and aggressive player. This means you fold most hands, but when you do decide to play a hand, you bet and raise with it. When you’re only putting money in the pot when you have a good chance of having the best hand, and you combine that with putting money in when you do, you get an edge.
