If you play in a game with a 5% rake taken from each pot, you not only must beat the other players, but you must beat them often enough to compensate for the somewhat smaller pots you’re winning. In fact, if you played in a game with a rake with eight players who were all of the same skill level as you, 168pg all of you would lose money steadily over the long run. There’s a lot to becoming an expert poker player, but most experts agree that the starting point is becoming a tight and aggressive player. This means you fold most hands, but when you do decide to play a hand, you bet and raise with it. When you’re only putting money in the pot when you have a good chance of having the best hand, and you combine that with putting money in when you do, you get an edge.
