A critical and defining aspect of the El Al Airlines Baggage Policy is its extensive list of prohibited and restricted items, which is notably stricter than those of many other international carriers. This rigor is a direct reflection of the airline's paramount focus on security. Prohibited items are those that are strictly forbidden from being carried in either checked or carry-on baggage under any circumstances. This category includes explosives, flammable substances (such as lighter fluid, paint, and fireworks), compressed gases, corrosive materials (including acids and bleach), oxidizing materials, toxic or infectious substances, radioactive materials, and magnetized materials. Sharp objects with blades longer than 6 cm, such as knives, axes, and swords, are also completely banned from the cabin. Firearms, ammunition, and realistic replicas of weapons are strictly prohibited, with very limited exceptions for hunting rifles that must be declared in advance and transported in the hold under specific conditions. Restricted items are those that may be carried under certain conditions or in limited quantities. Lithium batteries are a prime example; while common in devices like laptops and smartphones, spare or loose lithium batteries are generally prohibited in checked baggage due to the fire risk and must be carried in the cabin. Power banks and portable chargers also fall into this category and are restricted to carry-on luggage only. Liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on baggage are subject to the 100ml rule and must be contained within a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag. Duty-free liquids purchased after the security checkpoint are exempt if sealed and accompanied by a receipt. Due to the high number of unique or unusual items travelers might consider bringing, it is imperative to consult El Al's official and frequently updated list of prohibited and restricted items well in advance of your trip. Declaring hazardous materials or unusual items through El Al’s cargo department is always the safest course of action if there is any uncertainty. Ultimately, strict adherence to these guidelines is not just a matter of policy but a critical component of global aviation security, and non-compliance can result in confiscated items, denied boarding, or legal action.
