Russian Red garlic is a hardneck type that has a strong flavor and great cold hardiness, which makes it popular among gardeners. To successfully grow, select large, firm cloves and plant them 4–6 inches apart in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Plant in fall, generally around a few weeks before the ground will freeze, to allow the cloves to develop deep roots during the winter. Each clove should be placed root-side down, about 2 inches deep, then covered with soil and a layer of mulch for protection. Planting Russian Red garlic thrives in full sun and benefits from consistent moisture during its growing season. Come midsummer, you’ll notice tall, curling scapes that can be harvested for cooking or left to nourish the bulbs. By mid to late summer, the garlic can be harvested, yielding big, flavorful bulbs suitable for cooking and storage.
