Current Trending Movies

Nollywood’s current landscape features a mix of genres, from family dramas to horror and crime thrillers, reflecting its versatility. Below are some of the trending movies in 2025, based on recent releases and critical reception:

1. Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024)

Directed by Funke Akindele, this comedy-drama has become the highest-grossing film in West Africa, earning over ?1.88 billion. Part of the popular Jenifa franchise, it follows the humorous exploits of Jenifa, a character known for her relatable antics. Its success underscores the power of serial content and Akindele’s influence as a leading female creative in Nollywood.

2. Ms. Kanyin (2025)

Produced by Nemsia Studios, this horror film draws on the Madam Koi Koi folklore, exploring teenage recklessness in a bloody, suspenseful narrative. While praised for its ambition, reviews note its struggle to fully integrate horror elements with cultural lore. It premiered in July 2025, showcasing Nollywood’s growing experimentation with genre diversity.

3. The Lost Days (2025)

A family drama premiering on Prime Video on July 11, 2025, The Lost Days is the ninth release under the First Features Project. It explores themes of family and forgiveness, resonating with audiences for its emotional depth and universal appeal.

4. MAKEMATION (2025)

This Tech/AI-themed, coming-of-age drama follows a young girl in rural Lagos navigating poverty through innovation. Described as a “4-quadrant family tale,” it blends entertainment, science, and AI to deliver a message of hope. Its thought-provoking narrative has positioned it as a breakout hit.

5. To Kill A Monkey (2025)

Directed by Kemi Adetiba, this crime drama series, set for a July 2025 Netflix release, has generated buzz for its gripping storytelling and high production values. Adetiba, known for The Wedding Party and King of Boys, continues to push Nollywood toward global standards.

Despite its success, Nollywood faces challenges like piracy, limited funding, and a lack of formal training, with only two recognized film institutes in Nigeria and Ghana. Many filmmakers are self-taught, relying on on-the-job learning or online resources. However, technological advancements, such as high-definition cameras and digital editing tools, are improving production quality. Initiatives like the First Features Project and partnerships with global platforms offer opportunities for new talent to emerge.
