Vilitra 20 mg (vardenafil) should NOT be taken with grapefruit or grapefruit juice.Grapefruit contains compounds called furanocoumarins that inhibit the enzyme CYP3A4, which is responsible for breaking down vardenafil in the liver and intestines. When CYP3A4 is blocked, vardenafil stays in the bloodstream much longer and at much higher levels than intended.
Why this is a problem
If vardenafil levels become too high, the risk of side effects increases significantly. These may include:
Severe headache
Dizziness or fainting
Sudden drop in blood pressure
Flushing
Vision changes
Priapism (a prolonged, painful erection)
In some cases, combining grapefruit with PDE-5 inhibitors like vardenafil may cause dangerous cardiovascular effects, especially in people with heart disease, those taking blood-pressure medications, or older adults.
How long to avoid grapefruit
Grapefruit’s effect on CYP3A4 can last 24–72 hours, meaning even drinking grapefruit juice a day or two before taking VILITRA 20 may still cause increased drug levels.
Safe recommendation
To reduce risk, avoid grapefruit, grapefruit juice, Seville oranges, and pomelos while using Vilitra 20 mg. If you accidentally took them together or feel unusual side effects, contact a healthcare provider promptly.
