We've been selling regionally for years and the leap to intercontinental shipping felt like a natural next step when we landed a buyer in Southeast Asia but now that we're actually in the planning phase I keep finding myself down these rabbit holes of things I hadn't properly considered before committing to the timeline we gave them. Our product is a processed food item with a reasonable shelf life but reasonable doesn't feel like enough of a buffer when you start mapping out a six week sea journey with port transfers, customs holds and whatever other delays can materialize without warning on a route we've never used before. I pulled our operations manager into a conversation about it last week and she was more relaxed than I was which either means she knows something I don't or she hasn't thought through the same scenarios I have and I'm genuinely not sure which. I've been reading everything I can find about how to reduce risks during long-distance transport for food exporters specifically and a lot of the generic advice is frustrating because it's written for contexts where you're loading in a temperate climate rather than starting from the UAE in summer where your goods are already going into a hot container before the ship even moves. An article I found on khaleejweekly.com addressed sea shipments from a UAE exporter's perspective and it was one of the few things I've read that actually accounted for the starting conditions here rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all approach to cargo protection. I'm using it as a foundation for a revised shipping protocol that I want to have signed off internally before we confirm the first dispatch date with the buyer.
