“This Should Be Quick”

I still remember how it started.

I opened a sudoku puzzle thinking, “I’ve got about 10 minutes. This should be quick.”

It didn’t look too intimidating. Not too empty, not too crowded. Just a normal grid that I assumed I could handle without much trouble.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

A Decent Start

The first few minutes went smoothly.

I filled in the obvious numbers, completed a couple of sections, and felt that familiar sense of progress. Everything seemed under control.

“This is going well,” I thought.

And for a while, it really was.

The Slowdown

Then, gradually… things slowed down.

The easy moves disappeared. The grid became less cooperative. I had to think a bit more, scan a bit longer, double-check my logic.

Still manageable—but definitely not “quick” anymore.

I glanced at the time.

Already more than 10 minutes.

Stuck in the Middle

This is where things got tricky.

I reached a point where I wasn’t completely stuck—but I wasn’t moving forward either. I’d find one number, then nothing for a while. Then another small breakthrough, followed by more silence.

It felt like trying to push through mud.

I considered stopping.

But something about the puzzle made me want to keep going.

The “I’m Too Deep Now” Phase

At some point, I realized I had spent way more time on this than planned.

And instead of quitting, I thought, “I’ve come this far, I might as well finish.”

That’s always a dangerous mindset.

Because now, it wasn’t just about solving the puzzle—it was about justifying the time I had already spent.

Losing Track of Time

I stopped checking the clock.

I leaned in, focused harder, and tried to break the puzzle down piece by piece. It wasn’t fun in the usual sense—it was more like a quiet determination to see it through.

There were moments of progress, but they were small and hard-earned.

Every number felt like a tiny victory.

The Final Stretch

Eventually, things started to open up again.

The grid, which had felt impossible earlier, began to make sense. One section led to another, and suddenly I was back in a rhythm.

Not fast—but steady.

And finally, I reached the last few numbers.

Done… Finally

When I placed the final number, I leaned back and checked the time.

I had spent way longer than I intended.

Way longer.

I just stared at the screen for a second, half amused, half exhausted.

Was It Worth It?

Honestly?

Yeah… kind of.

Not because it was fun the entire time—it wasn’t. There were definitely moments of frustration and doubt.

But finishing it felt different from the usual quick puzzles.

It felt earned.

Why That Puzzle Stuck With Me

Most puzzles come and go.

You solve them, move on, and forget about them.

But this one stayed with me.

Because it challenged my patience. It forced me to slow down. It made me sit with discomfort and push through it.

And in the end, it reminded me that not everything needs to be quick to be satisfying.

A Lesson in Expectations

That experience also taught me to be more careful with expectations.

Just because something looks easy doesn’t mean it will be.

And sometimes, the things that take longer than expected are the ones you remember the most.

Final Thoughts

That one Sudoku puzzle completely ignored my “10-minute plan”—and I’m kind of glad it did.

It turned into something more than just a quick game. It became a small test of patience and focus.
