Resonance is the amplification and enrichment of a sound through the vibration of surrounding structures. When you sing, your vocal cords (more accurately called vocal folds) vibrate to produce a sound. But that initial sound is actually quite thin and weak on its own — it's what happens after that gives your voice its power, richness, and character. As sound waves travel upward from the vocal folds, they enter a network of hollow spaces in your body known as resonators. These include: The pharynx (the back of your throat) The oral cavity (your mouth) The nasal cavity (your nose and sinus spaces) The chest cavity (primarily felt in lower registers) The laryngeal ventricle (a small space just above the vocal folds) Each of these spaces has its own shape, size, and acoustic properties. When a sound wave enters a resonating space that matches or complements its frequency, the wave is amplified — sometimes dramatically. This is the same principle that makes a violin body amplify the sound of its strings, or a cathedral make even a whisper sound enormous. The critical insight is this: resonance is free power. You don't need to push harder, strain more, or sing louder to increase projection. You need to learn how to shape and direct sound into the resonating spaces that work most efficiently for your voice.
