Sublimation patches usually need a heat press, but you can still make them without one. The trick is to use another steady heat source that gives even pressure and enough warmth to bond the ink into the fabric.
A regular household iron is the most common choice. Set it to high heat with no steam, place your printed design on the patch blank, cover it with parchment paper, and press down firmly. Hold it in one spot for a minute, then move to the next area. Do not slide the iron around, since that can blur the print.
Another option is a hair straightener, which works well for small patches. Its flat plates give you tight, direct heat that is easy to control. You can also use a mug press or a small craft heat tool if you already own one.
For clean, full color printed patches, quality parchment paper and firm pressure matter most. Rushing the process is the main reason results turn out faded or patchy.
While these methods work, a heat press still gives the most consistent results. If you plan to make patches often, it is a smart tool to invest in later.
