I’m planning a rail trip and have been looking into amtrak train routes and prices before deciding which option would work best. I noticed that the fare is only one part of the comparison because different routes can also vary in travel time, departure schedules, station locations, and available travel options.
One thing I find useful is comparing a few different departures instead of choosing the first option that appears. A slightly different schedule may fit better with hotel check-in, sightseeing plans, or transportation after reaching the destination.
I also think it helps to look at the complete travel cost. Besides the train ticket, there may be expenses for getting to the station, local transportation after arrival, meals, and accommodation. Looking at everything together gives a better idea of whether a particular route fits the overall travel budget.
