Editing is always worth it, whether you do it yourself or get help. Many marks are lost on small things like unclear sentences, weak structure and referencing mistakes, not on the ideas themselves.
Here is what has worked for me:
Take a break first. Leave the essay for a few hours, or overnight. You will spot mistakes much more easily with fresh eyes. Edit in layers. Check the big picture first (does the argument answer the question?), then paragraph structure, then sentences, and last of all grammar and spelling. Read it out loud. If a sentence sounds awkward or you run out of breath, it needs to be shorter. Cut the extra words. Remove repeated points and long phrases that don't add anything. Check your referencing. Make sure every citation matches your reference list and follows the required style. Get a second opinion. A friend, classmate, tutor or your university's writing centre can see problems you've stopped noticing.
If you do choose to use an Essay Editing Service , check the revision policy and the reviews first, and compare the price against what you really need. But for most students, a careful self-edit plus feedback from a tutor or friend goes a long way.
