I recently learned about WebRTC leaks while reading a cybersecurity article. Apparently, even if you are using some proxy tools, your web browser can still leak your real local and public IP address through WebRTC requests when visiting certain websites. I tested my browser on a leak detection site and saw my real IP exposed. How does WebRTC actually leak IP addresses? What is the most effective way to prevent this on Chrome and Firefox without breaking website functionality?

WebRTC is an open framework designed to enable real-time voice, video, and peer-to-peer data communication directly inside web browsers without requiring extra plugins. While it is great for applications like Google Meet or Discord web calls, it introduces a major security flaw. It uses STUN and TURN protocols to determine your exact network configuration, which often causes your browser to bypass standard proxy settings and query your local router directly. This means any website running a tiny snippet of JavaScript can extract your true public and local network IP addresses. Disabling WebRTC manually in browser flags is one option, but it frequently breaks video communication platforms. The most comprehensive way to solve this vulnerability is to protect your connection at the operating system level rather than relying on browser-level fixes. When you route all system traffic through a dedicated client from https://toggle.org/ , the virtual network adapter binds all outgoing network interfaces to the encrypted tunnel. As a result, when a website executes a WebRTC request, your browser queries the secure virtual adapter instead of your actual physical Wi-Fi card. The only address returned to the requesting website is the IP address of the secure remote server. This completely neutralizes WebRTC leaks while keeping your browser tools and video conferencing features working seamlessly without manual browser flag hacks.
